Gov. Baldacci OK With New ID Approach

WMTW – July 22, 2009:

Gov. John Baldacci’s office said the Maine Democrat generally supports federal legislation to establish Pass ID secure identification.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who visited last weekend’s National Governors Association conference in Mississippi that Baldacci attended, said the legislation is designed to fulfill the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation to establish national standards for secure driver’s licenses.

Proponents said the bill offers strong privacy protection provisions, reduced costs and greater flexibility for states that would enable standards to be fully implemented a year ahead of the current REAL ID deadline of 2017.

Real ID has encountered resistance in Maine and other states.

Perhaps I missed the part in the Constitution authorizing the federal government to require anybody to possess any sort of national id card.
